Sitting in his garden in the spring sunshine, the owner of the beautiful house on Vicarage Road, in Bradwell, is pleased to have been part of the property’s long history. Set within one of Milton Keynes’s ancient villages, it also benefits from the town’s exceptional transport connections, as well as proximity to its shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. “We were living around the corner 18 years ago and were not even thinking of moving, but, when we saw it was for sale, we thought we would have a look,” he recalls. “We agreed it was such an attractive looking house, with its Georgian windows and its internal features, including its architraves, built-in cupboards and fireplaces.”

CHARACTER HOME
Dating back to 1750 in part, the handsome property is thought to have originally been a farmhouse perhaps. It was designed and built in a red brick, with blue brick chequer pattern, and features a portico believed to have been reclaimed from the manor house at one time in its history. “This house was very much part of the old village,” he says. “It sits close to the church and there were nurseries behind it.” Since moving in, the owners have carried out careful extension and renovation work. “We have extended out to the back to create a large kitchen dining room and connected the main house to a large barn, which is now our main sitting room. This means we now have some areas that offer spacious modern living and others that are older and have a cosier, more traditional feel.”
NATURAL WORLD
The newer parts of the house also marry the contemporary and the characterful. “There is underfloor heating, in the new section, which has a natural slate floor,” he says. “We also wanted to keep it feeling very natural by leaving stone walls exposed and bringing in some oak.” The property is comfortable and easy to live in, with a layout and design which offers exceptional flexibility. “It is set up perfectly for us, but the advantage of the house is that it could be used in all sorts of different ways,” he adds.
FLEXIBLE LIVING
Upstairs there are two large bedrooms, one with a smaller adjacent room which could be left as a bedroom or utilised as a dressing room or converted to an en suite bathroom if someone wished. The front sitting room, is a large square room with dual aspect windows, original shutters and coving; there is also an attractive working fireplace. This room has in the past, been used as the owner’s office and then, later on, a bedroom. The large open plan kitchen/dining area has a mezzanine level above, he continues. Thiscould also have a range of uses. “Again, if needed, this could be an additional bedroom for guests,” he observes. The property also has two cellars, which contribute to the high levels of storage provided; these are currently used for wine and to house the freezer. Entrance to the rear of the property is into a large utility room which has space and plumbing for the installation of a downstairs shower if desired.
HAPPY TIMES
The kitchen, dining room create wonderful open plan entertaining space, which can easily be sub-divided. “The lounge area opens directly onto the garden which is especially nice in the summer months. The sitting room is lovely in the winter with the open fire. We have had lots of big family occasions here throughout the different seasons, including many Christmases. The benefit of a pitched roof allows for a 10’ Christmas Tree”
