Since moving into the attractive four-bedroom home, the couple have refurbished it from top to bottom. Every room has been modernised and updated, with special touches added here and there. “We replaced the kitchen, the ground floor cloakroom and both the bathrooms,” she says. “We installed French windows in the drawing room that now open on to the deck and had a new window fitted to make the most of the views over towards the canal.” The interior of the property is bright and airy, with a contemporary style in some places and a more traditional one in others. “We designed it all ourselves and feel it all works very well,” she says.
SUNNY AND BRIGHT
The house at Staters Pound is entered via a lobby and then the entrance hall. This opens into the very large, triple aspect drawing room. Also leading from the hall is the family room, which gives on to the conservatory. There is also a ground floor cloakroom and dining room, as well as the kitchen breakfast room. “We do love sitting in the conservatory, which looks out over the side garden,” she says. “Even when the weather is not good it is a lovely place to be – and is very peaceful. The drawing room is also a fantastic room to relax in as it enjoys views over the canal.” She adds: “The sunshine moves around the house throughout the day so there is always a room that is sunny and bright.”
FLEXIBLE SPACE
All four bedrooms and two bathrooms are up on the first floor of the house. “We currently use one of these as an office – it is a great place to work as it also has views over the water,” she observes.” The property also comes with an outbuilding that could have a variety of uses. “This was originally the show home and our double garage was the office,” she explains. “I now use the space as my nail room and as exercise area. We have also held my granddaughter’sbirthday parties in here – but it could have a variety of uses. It could be ideal for someone wishing to work from home or to have a gym or leisure space. Equally, someone could transform it back into a garage very easily if that suited their needs better.”
OUTDOOR LIVING
The beautiful gardens at the Staters Pound house have also given the couple great pleasure. Over the years they have nurtured and cultivated them, describing them as “a labour of love.” “We have wrap-around gardens which mean we can chase the sun around the house all day! There is always somewhere to enjoy it. The front garden with the decking is nice for coffee in the morning, overlooking the canal, or for family barbecues in the early evening. The back garden is ideal for parties and get-togethers as it catches the sunshine from about 11am through to 6pm,” she says. “The side garden has sun from 12pm until early evening, making that a very nice place to be as well.”
CONVENIENT LOCATION
When not relaxing at home they like to take their boat out on the water for the afternoon or to stroll by the water’s edge. “We walk along beside the canal every day,” she says. “We see all kinds of birds from herons, gulls and kingfishers to ducks, geese and swans. There is one pair of swans that come up the canals with their cygnets and people feed them by hand at the canal side.” While they enjoy their proximity to nature, the Pennyland location of their home also means they have good access to Milton Keynes, Leighton Buzzard and even London. “We are just 10 minutes from the train station here,” she adds. “In fact, we are just 10 minutes from everything: the M1 motorway, cinemas, theatres and restaurants. Everything is so convenient and yet we have the beauty of the canal as well. We love being here so much that although we are downsizing, we hope to be able to move to another waterside home.”
