3 Bedroom cottage Chavey Down Road, Winkfield Row £600,000

This three bedroom semi-detached cottage is an attractive family home, which has been carefully extended and beautifully enhanced by its current owners.

This well-presented cottage has a firm place in Winkfield Row’s history and a very special place in the hearts of the current owners. Dating back to the late 19th century, it was once part of the Brockhill House Estate, which encompassed some 30 acres of grounds, including cottages and other outbuildings.

The Story
“It was originally built as a two-up-two-down house and was a tied home for an estate worker,” one of the owners explains. “In the mid-1940s, my husband’s grandmother moved in as she was a housekeeper at the large property; in the 1960s, she was given the opportunity to buy it and my husband was actually born in here.” In 2008, the couple themselves were given the chance to take full ownership of Poplar Cottage and admit they could not resist it. “We had always enjoyed returning here to visit and for family parties and my husband had emotional ties to the house,” she recalls. “We could also see it held great potential to be extended and upgraded to become a wonderful modern family home for us and our children. We were only living 200m down the road at the time and loved the location. It seemed to be a fantastic opportunity.”
A NEW CHAPTER
The couple embarked on their major extension and renovation project almost immediately. Work saw them build out to the rear and sides to create a stunning new kitchen breakfast room, with a view out over the garden, as well as a utility room and cloakroom. Upstairs, the additional space gave them three double bedrooms, one with an en suite shower room, as well as a generous family bathroom. “Everything was taken right back so the upgrading and extension work could be carried out properly; rooms were opened up to create bright, airy, comfortable family living space,” she adds.
MODERN LIVING
Decorated from a largely neutral palette and featuring oak flooring throughout the ground floor, Poplar Cottage is easy to maintain and has a calm ambience. “We have found the space here works very well for us but there could be potential (subject to the relevant planning permissions) to create a fourth bedroom upstairs by building out over the driveway,” she observes.
LEAFY LOCATION
The location of the property has also been ideal for the family. “It is an incredibly convenient place to live. As well as having such a lovely garden, we are in a very green, leafy area, with lots of parks and open spaces: I run every day and there are many fantastic paths and bridle paths to head off on. We are also just six miles from Windsor Great Park, have good primary and secondary schools close by and are only 15 to 20 minutes from the M3, M4 and M25.” She adds: “I worked in London for many years and it is also easy to commute in by train or to travel in for day trips. We will miss that greatly when we leave and will also miss this wonderful family home. It has given us a such a superb lifestyle balance and we all have a great emotional attachment to it.”
SETTING THE SCENE
Poplar Cottage is set back from the road with a front garden and off-road parking. To the rear, the house opens on to a mature garden, with decking, lawn and attractive herbaceous borders. In spring, the garden bursts into colour with the arrival of daffodils and other seasonal blooms. “My father-in-law created a beautiful feature hedge, with an archway in it, which stretches across the width of the garden,” the owner says. “There is always somewhere to enjoy either the sunshine or the shade.”
