Living in Lincoln

Lincoln is a city steeped in history, stunning architecture and scenic views. But it’s not just for history buffs, as Lincoln is also home to vibrant festivals, a growing art scene and cultural delights.

History of the area

Lincoln was first founded by the Romans in AD 50, where they built a wooden fortress (which later became a home for retiring soldiers). Lincoln Cathedral, which was the tallest building in the world in the 12th century, was and still is home to the Magna Carta. It is one of only 4 surviving copies, which can now be found locked away in a vault at Lincoln Castle. In more recent history, Lincoln gained the nickname of ‘Tank Town’ due to the first ever army tanks being designed here.

The property market

Properties with character

With a rich history, Lincoln is perhaps unsurprisingly full of incredible period properties. From stately Georgian homes to converted listed buildings. Lincoln is not typically associated with high-rise buildings or built up areas, instead it is more closely associated with smaller close-knit communities that wish to retain Lincoln’s fascinating history.

Popular places to live

Bracebridge Heath is a popular area for growing families, with a range of larger properties available in a smaller close-knit community. Canwick, which was named the coolest place to live in Lincolnshire in 2023, is perfect for those who love the outdoors and is home to Whisby Nature Park. Last but by no means least we have Nettleham, which is just outside of the city centre and has been awarded the Best Kept Village Award several times.

Schools and education

Lincoln, despite being in Lincolnshire, is not part of the local education system and mainly sticks to the grammar-school system. This means that pupils here tend to attain higher grades, compared to the national average. There are a range of fantastic schools in Lincoln, such as Lincoln UTC for teens and Lincoln College for further education. In terms of universities there is The University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste University, both ranked within the top 20% UK universities.

Transport links

Buses can be found running 7 days a week from the city centre, with Lincoln Bus Station a stone’s throw from the railway station with a Park and Ride service also available. Lincoln Train Station is just on the edge of the city centre and runs frequent services to popular locations such as London, Nottingham and Leicester. Humberside International Airport is just 30 miles away, which offers flights both nationally and internationally.

This, and so much more, can be discovered in Lincoln.
