Living in Grantham

The south Lincolnshire town of Grantham has plenty to recommend it for the property buyer – a thriving town centre, parks, shops, cafés and restaurants. It also boasts a good range of schools and excellent links to Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham and Peterborough. Find out more with our guide to living in Grantham.

History of the area

The market town of Grantham featured in the Domesday Book, and owed much of its development to being on the Great North Road, the main (and only) coach route from London to Edinburgh. Its biggest claims to fame are the people who have been born here – Isaac Newton, the founder of the laws of gravity, and Margaret Thatcher, the UK’s first female Prime Minister. Newton went to school here, and made many of his discoveries at nearby Woolsthorpe Manor, his childhood home. Grantham is also associated with mechanical innovation – the first running diesel engine, and the first tractor, was made there at the end of the 19th century.

Fun fact – gingerbread biscuits also come from Grantham! They were first baked there in 1740.

Popular places to live

Manthorpe at the northern end of the town is leafy and quiet, and well placed for schools. There are always a good range of detached and semi-detached large family houses on the market there. Many people choose to live in one of the surrounding villages, like Croxton Kerrial or Ancaster. Average prices are higher here, but the farmhouses, cottages and barn conversions, not to mention the countryside views, are more than worth it. There are some stunning new developments in the Green Lane area too.

Schools and education

Grantham is blessed with a number of high performing schools. Primary schools with a ‘good’ Ofsted rating in the town include Dudley House School on Dudley Road and St Anne’s Church of England Primary on Harrowby Road. The Priory Ruskin Academy on Rushcliffe Road is an ‘outstanding’ secondary school with ‘high quality teaching and strong progress for all pupils’. Isaac Newton’s alma mater, The King’s School, is a state selective boys school close to the town centre. Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School on Sandon Road is rated ‘outstanding’.

Transport links

Grantham is situated on the East Coast Main Line, and there are regular LNER trains to King’s Cross, taking an hour and 10 minutes. Many people use the train to commute to Peterborough (20 minutes) and Nottingham (37 minutes). The A1 used to go straight through Grantham, but now by-passes the town. The A52 is the main east-west road link to Nottingham.

Lifestyle and leisure

Places to see

Make sure you visit Woolsthorpe Manor, a few miles outside Grantham, where Newton conducted many of his experiments. The apple tree which inspired his theory of gravity is still there! Belvoir Castle is one of England’s finest castles from the Regency period, offering a fun day for all the family to enjoy.

Things to do

The Guildhall Arts Centre on St Peter’s Hill is the main entertainment venue in Grantham, with a busy programme of live music, touring theatre productions and top class comedy. The Savoy is an independent 5-screen cinema on St Catherine’s Road that only opened in 2019 and is already a firm favourite with the town’s film fans. Shop for something sustainable or some fine local produce at the Engine Yard, a luxury retail village near Belvoir Castle.

Where to eat

Tuck into delicious pasta, seafood and pizza at Piccola Venezia on Wharf Road. The best place for a hearty, high quality evening meal or Sunday roast is the Angel & Royal, one of England’s oldest coaching inns, right in the heart of the High Street. The Woodhouse Arms in Corby Glen is one of the best country pubs in the area.

The surrounding area

People love living in this part of Lincolnshire. Grantham sits near the tranquil Vale of Belvoir, close to nature reserves and historic country houses, but also within easy driving distance of the cities of Nottingham, Lincoln, Leicester and Peterborough.
